Can we AI-proof ourselves and our careers? (And are there new tech-based tools that might help us accomplish our human-based artistic goals in ways we could not just a couple of years ago?)\nHow can independent or developing artists find an audience in today’s algorithmically driven industry? How has “Social Media” redefined the artists-audience dynamic? And what about playlists\, podcasts\, and people actually BUYING music? We will talk specifics – and provide space and time for you to DO the stuff we discuss (with other artists.)\nWhat else is on YOUR list to discuss?\n\nDeveloping negotiation skills and understanding contracts?\nFinding and applying constructive feedback as you develop?\nHow does “networking” work in an online world? (and do I care?)\nUnderstanding budgeting\, business expenses\, and tax issues related to your work?\nWhat is the best way to distribute your music?\nWhen and how should an attorney be called? What do they charge?\nShould indie songwriters be paid (and paying) each other mechanical royalties for co-written songs on indie releases that are making no money? What are the pros and cons? What happens if a song breaks through?\n\n\n\nAnd while I\, “Professor Thompson\,” am the Director of Music Industry Studies at Lipscomb University\, this time will be much more interactive than lecture-based. We expect the room to be full of working artists and writers with their own perspectives\, stories\, and wisdom. Expect a structured and focused conversation informed and directed by many voices and guided with intention by someone who wants to see everyone in the room thrive. We won’t have time to fully explore everything in our first 5-hour meeting\, but we will cover 2-3 things in depth\, we will generate a comprehensive list of topics for future gatherings\, and everyone WILL leave with a TANGIBLE product: an electronic workbook with links\, resources\, and an action plan to help them make progress toward their own personal goals for their music. \nExpect to learn a lot\, to come away empowered and directed\, and to meet new friends who are as serious about taking their craft and business to the next level as you are. \nWe believe music still matters. We believe there is a heart still beating here. And while the music industry continues to grow and expand\, raking in more money than ever before\, many artists and writers have resigned themselves to a life on the outside of the “content machine” that shares in most of that growth. We believe that revenue growth in music shows that people still value this stuff. Songs are still worth something. And while money has never been WHY most of us make music\, it is HOW we do. DESCRIPTION:Artist Care Encounter with David Bunker\n(Give to the GoFundMe Here) \nA Celebration of His Life and Legacy\n(see below for a letter from Dave)\nSaturday\, September 12\, 2026 ·  7 – 9 PM \nChrist Community Church – Harpeth House Fellowship Hall \n1215 Hillsboro Road\, Franklin\, TN \n(Look for the single-story Harpeth House on the north side of the campus.) \nOver the past two years\, Dave has been living with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD)\, a progressive neurological disease that affects thinking\, movement\, sleep\, and daily functioning. While every person’s journey with LBD is different\, Dave’s symptoms have increased significantly in recent months\, requiring ongoing care and specialized treatment. \nAs many of you know\, Dave has spent his life pouring into others. We would love the opportunity to pour back into him. \nThis evening will be an opportunity for friends\, former students\, fellow artists\, musicians\, pastors\, and family members to gather and celebrate Dave’s remarkable life and ministry. \nThe Evening Will Include \n\nReflections with Dave’s on his life and legacy\nMusic from friends who have shared the journey with him\nA photo retrospective\nAn open mic for those who would like to briefly share how Dave has impacted their lives\nInformation about Dave’s newest book\, which will be available for purchase\nA chance to encourage Dave and Kathy personally\n\nMost importantly\, we simply want Dave and Kathy to experience what they have given to so many others over the years — love\, gratitude\, encouragement\, and community. \nFrom Dave:\n \nOver five years ago\, Kathy and I traveled to Fort Wayne for a Christmas visit with family (we’re holiday people\, all of us)\, and partway through\, it became clear something was wrong. My balance was off. My memory wasn’t holding onto things the way it should. We had to leave the party early. It was confusing and painful. \nWe came home to Chicago\, and travel of any kind has been hard ever since. What began as one strange evening became a slow unraveling — as if certain moments simply weren’t being kept anymore\, as if my mind couldn’t hold onto them. \nOver the next five years\, Kathy and I made more trips to hospitals and emergency rooms than I can count. Walking into a hospital\, you’re really just hoping someone can name what’s happening to you — and each answer came slowly\, and at real financial cost. Eventually\, we had one: Lewy Body Dementia\, a progressive brain disorder in which abnormal protein deposits called Lewy bodies build up in nerve cells\, affecting thinking\, movement\, mood\, and behavior. It’s one of the more common forms of dementia\, usually beginning after age 50\, and more than a million Americans live with it. Visual hallucinations are common\, often early on. From diagnosis\, people typically live five to eight years — sometimes as few as two\, sometimes as many as twenty. It depends on the person. \nFor Kathy and me\, Lewy Body Dementia is now a daily companion. The symptoms shift and flare in ways that are hard to predict\, and some days the only real option is to check into a clinic and see what they find. Places like the Cleveland Clinic and the Lewy Body Dementia Center in Chicago have been central to piecing this together. But it’s slow\, and it isn’t cheap. It adds up\, week after week. \nWe’re at the point now where we need to ask for help — for encouragement\, and for support as we face what Lewy Body Dementia continues to bring. On September 12\, we’re gathering with friends in Nashville to take that next step together and to launch a GoFundMe page. \nPlease pray for us as we walk this path.
