AND THE REST WILL FOLLOW by Project 86 Tooth & Nail Records
What were the chances that the long-awaited “And the Rest Will Follow” would be anything but awesome?
After a few years’ wait, Project 86 offers us an album sure to exceed their fans’ hopes. One expects heavy, Korn-esque hardcore from a Project project, but sometimes one forgets to expect maturity, depth and insight both musically and lyrically. This is a mistake: Never underestimate this band’s ability to blend sonic quality with provocative, profound lyrics.
Standout tracks include the already much beloved “Sincerely, Ichabod,” “All of Me” and the very cool “My Will Be a Dead Man.” Overall, the sound on this disc is pensive, dark and very poetic, particularly on the title track and “Doomsday Stomp.” The heavy drums on “Wordsmith Legacy” are sure to remind you of everything about “Drawing Black Lines” that made Project 86 a favorite of many.
Lyrically, “And the Rest Will Follow” treats topics of faith and life with depth and effectiveness. While none of the songs are unduly violent, the listener should be aware that a few songs may create somewhat troubling mental images, i.e. “Cavity King”: “Bait her in comfort complete / Then move to kill / Red ink / Spills from her veins / In curses, in cursive.” Depending on your sensitivity and imagination and life experiences, metaphors like this can be a teensy bit rattling.
But I’m not going to beat that drum too hard, because I think it’s great when a band can capture weighty and provocative themes in weighty and provocative ways. As if you needed another reason to buy this disc. Dude, it’s Project 86. |
